Possible FAQ for the RP?

Post by Destination on Wed Jan 22, 2014 11:07 pm

Opt and Tusjecht’s big FAQ as to what are we going to do

Let's define what do you guys need to know.

The same way as in a rock concert, you guys don't need to concern yourself with the organization, setting up the stall, and knowing the rules and regulations. That's up to Tusjecht and me. That means that outside of having your own stats as an orientation of what you can do or how hard you can wank your ability or Enhanced Armament, you don't need to concern yourself with whether you can do this or that. Just go and do whatever, and we'll determine the result.

To put it simply, you guys are the players, Tusjecht and I are the impartial referees.

This means, you will no longer rely on stats and calculations to determine if the guy in front of you is stronger or weaker, or on sheets to tell if he or you can perform that maneuver or not. What succeeds and what doesn't is up to how one describes what he's doing, perhaps some luck, and the character's individual assets.

Stats of the opponent will be only revealed when you've seen an action relevant to it, and details of abilities and Special Moves will be only known afterwards, and even then they will be incomplete because you can only know what you've seen about it.

To give you an example, if you are fighting Cyan Pile and he calls out 'Lightning Cyan Spike' and you have not ever seen it, you would be unable to tell what type of attack is it, what will its directionality be, or how much damage can it deal to you.

The more you know, both as a player and In Character, the less trouble you'll have dealing with whatever is thrown your way, and this is why experience is pretty important. Furthermore, unlike in other RPs where you're wagering life and death, here there's at least some leeway, making trial and error experience far less annoying.

This, in other words, makes observation your greatest weapon. Look out for benches to break on someone's head, for buildings to leap on the opponent, for shadows to hide in and ambush an unaware fellow player. PM me or Tusjecht with your plan as opposed to asking in the chatbox or stating so in your post, and we'll put together a plan of action. You don't just meet after 2 turns in a Duel. Depending on who has the better strategy or is luckier, one might spot the other sooner.

This isn't supposed to be some sort of chess game with stats. This is a fighting game with high stakes and strategy elements, so let's play it like that. The key word here isn't 'character abilities and stat sheets' but 'player ability and thinking'. This isn't writing out a story with the GMs playing as 'those guys who spinecrush us and tells us what we can or can't do'. You guys describe your actions, we describe the results, and their story, epic or disastrous, grows much like it would in real life from the combined effort of player and referee. We are likely to be as surprised from the results as you are. Try doing ninja jumps, ambushes, looking around for clues of your enemies' presence. Illusions such as Silly Go Round, which back then took an effort from both players to play out, will be far more effective, as now there's nothing to compare them to.

To summarize: Nothing is planned, Everything is permitted. We'll make the consequences as hilarious as possible.

And then someone will say 'god, this sounds time consuming'. Actually…

It takes roughly the same amount of time in our test runs on IRC. You have to add significantly less amount of filler to your posts as there's actually things to do and look out for. Even in a player vs player match, as you don't know anything about each other besides what you've seen in prior encounters, Level Up Bonus, Enhanced Armament purchases, and new skill acquisitions become relevant, as your fellow player might have learned a new trick or two while you were off having tea parties.

Also, 'what if the referees are away/busy?'.

For that, for starters there's the two of us. And, if you guys can't wait for a person who doesn't even get paid for what he's doing, you should consider the opposite: you’d like for peeps to wait, or at least not kill you off, right?

It doesn't mean that we’ll slack off with exams, translation, or whatever else. On our side we’re working to manage our time effectively, and on yours it will help us and yourself to improve the quality of your roleplaying.

Events

While we're at it, I thought I might as well announce the way Tusjecht and I plan to handle this site, the plot, and pretty much everything.

To start with, let's define what are Events. Here, 'Event' means something relevant is going on in someone's hood. The rest just... happens offscreen. Your character goes to school, eats, goes to the bathroom, goes and does a few Duels every day, etc. However, as you don't feel like RPing out that stuff, you just make it happen offscreen while assuming that nothing interesting happens in the middle.

And here is when Events come in. Whenever we feel like throwing things on your way, I'll make an Event and it's up to you guys to reply in kind. Like say, there's this motherfucker stirring trouble in another's hood, and you can help settle the dispute by siding with either way. But that's not the only thing there's to it. If we did that, it would be the same old problem of the world of the GM and the player not being one and the same.

You guys can also initiate Events. It's your way of saying 'okay I feel I'm ready, please throw danger and a potential waifu/bro in my way'. An Event can be a dive into the Unlimited Neutral Zone with your henchmen, going to a Battle Zone and waiting until either a player or a NPC challenge you to a duel, or initiating a Territorial Battle. Unlike in other sites, where Events = RP stuff the site staff throws out at their whim, they are your way to do relevant things, to interact with the sandbox we put together. Events are the way to give players freedom while ensuring everyone's in the same boat.

You can apply the same to real life. If you want to make friends, initiate an Event and see who joins you, PC or NPC (within reason in the case of players, like, if one is in Shibuya and another lives in Edogawa, give me a reason why the two would coincide). Like I stated before, it's your nudge for us and perhaps fellow players to move and make your life more interesting.

Growth

For starters, Level Up Bonus:

No, you can't choose them. Instead, you will be given four choices, which will vary depending on how you make your choices. The only one that is 100% sure is that you can always boost your initial ability or Enhanced Armament, becoming stronger.

Acquisition of Out-Of-System (OOS) Skills belonging to the Burst Linker:

If you do interesting things in battles and keep on doing things focused on improving your skills, you will be able to learn new things. These can vary wildly depending on your combat experience.

Say for example you spend a lot of time jumping from above to ambush your enemy to get the first strike. If you practice long enough, you'll receive a PM saying that you've added a new skill to your repertoire that boosts significantly your chance to perform that action and damage dealt, and you can give it a name if you want to. These are stuff like Dive Kick, Aerial Combo, etc. Skills that don't belong to the system, but are made from the character's individual practice and effort.

They don't mean that you need a skill to perform an action; it simply means that you can do this normally, to the point where you don't need to go out of your way to make it happen. Say you want to perform an attack where you slash thrice at your enemy with a sword in the same turn. If it's the first time you're doing it, even if you are decently skilled, chances for fumbling are everywhere. But if you keep trying for long enough and have a moment of revelation in the middle of a battle, it may become possible to do it seamlessly, and even add more to the attack. That’s an OOS Skill.

Learning System Abilities mid battles?

Yes, it is possible. However, instances where this happens are rare, as you need to be in a really desperate situation and your character to have an extremely clear image of what he wants to do at the same time.

In other words, you must be facing a moment of extreme adversity, and that doesn't happen quite often. Please spare yourselves the trouble of stating how adverse the situation is. When the time is right and it's appropriate, it'll happen and we’ll give you a PM, so don't try to plan ahead because that isn't how it works.

We'll be handling that as well, but here's the gist of it anyways. You can register PCs and NPCs *only* after fighting or seeing them in battle. Can’t follow someone you’ve never met. This means that you will have to actively go out and add peeps to your Watch List.

This gives you access to information once in a while, but unlike information obtained first hand, it might not be quite as complete or as useful. You might not hear the name, not see it completely, or just see an explosion.

To give you an example, someone who is fighting Cyan Pile will see 'Lightning Cyan Spike' and thanks to experiencing it first hand, will be able to assess its range, power, and such to a good extent. On the other hand a person who is 500 metres away and is just watching will only see a beam of light and might not even hear its name, so it's not an excuse to know all of the details about everyone from the start.

You can also be expelled by PCs or NPCs if they don't feel like having you around, so bear that in mind, too. If they spot you and they decide they don't like you, tough luck. Very Happy
